CDK update

Beitrag von Lior »

Hey!

Is there any reason why we don't upgrade gcc and binutils?

2006-3-17 Lior

* Makefile.am: Replace --without-fp with --with-float=soft according
to GCC manual.
Add LDFLAGS to own applications.
* configure.ac: Remove -mmultiple, -mstring and -meabi from
TARGET_CFLAGS, since -mmultiple and -mstring are already set when -mcpu=823 is specified.
-meabi makes sense for powerpc-*-eabi targets but not for powerpc-*-linux.
Remove -s from TARGET_LDFLAGS, since binaries will be stripped anyway
during flash-lib.
Add -Wl,-O1 (cheap prelink) to TARGET_LDFLAGS.
* rules.archive: Bump to gcc-3.4.5 and binutils-2.16.91.0.6.
* rules-make: Likewise.
* Patches/glibc.diff: Make glibc-2.3.6 build with binutils-2.16.91.0.6.
(glibc and binutils guys are throwing the ball to each other for that!)

Hi,

since today there is a new version of binutils. It would be great if I could get a review for these changes.

Thanks.

Hi,

I'm rebuilding the cdk right now, looks promising so far, great work. More later...

PS
Later: After starting from scratch (make distclean), your changes didn't break anything. That's at least true for the targets I usually build (=enigma, dvbsnoop, plugins). Anyone else?

Re: CDK update

Beitrag von Barf »

I guess that "ping" means "I would be very happy to receive some feedback on my posting"... :wink: Here are some opinions. Speaking only for myself.
Lior hat geschrieben:* Makefile.am: Replace --without-fp with --with-float=soft according
to GCC manual.
Probably right. There are four appearances of --without-fp, any reason why you changed only two?
Add LDFLAGS to own applications.
4 sure! Checked in in newmake.
Rite. Normally the compiler writer should be the expert on what options -mcpu=$cpu invokes, and this should not be overwritten, unless "you" really know what you do. Also checked in in newmake.
Remove -s from TARGET_LDFLAGS, since binaries will be stripped anyway
during flash-lib.
At least in newmake, there is a difference, since newmake can build yadds and images with one configuration, and with your suggestion the binaries of the yadds will not be stripped. Anyhow, I have taken your suggestions; it may make enhance debugging in yadd enviroment.
Add -Wl,-O1 (cheap prelink) to TARGET_LDFLAGS.
I have made this in newmake. (In another thread, you have suggested --as-needed. I have explained there why this is not a good idea.)
* rules.archive: Bump to gcc-3.4.5 and binutils-2.16.91.0.6.
* rules-make: Likewise.
* Patches/glibc.diff: Make glibc-2.3.6 build with binutils-2.16.91.0.6.
(glibc and binutils guys are throwing the ball to each other for that!)
I have a problem with this. Replacing absolutely crucial tools for no other reason than that there are newer versions available? It requires (more or less) extensive testing. In particular, the patch required: Where does it come from? References? Discussion? Is it an official patch?

In all, thank you very much for your suggestion. They are clearly appreciated, although immediate answers do not occur.

I saw only three, 2 for gcc builds, 1 for binutils. That one for the binutils is OK to use --without-fp. But where is the 4th one?

Eh, don't do that! With your binutils version in CDK, it's broken! Your ld will screw up during mklibs. 8)

It's a harmless patch. Symbol collisions between binutils and glibc.
