is RS232 necessary ?

Beitrag von wbyoussef »

Hi once again !

I already highlighted my problem in "flashing a blocked dbox2 with winXP" topic. It seems that RS232 connexion is mandatory to perform flash operation !

Could I do flash in this case without RS232 cable ?

thanx !

Or could it be because I'm using 10/100MB ethernet card ?

hi,

i already read the other thread. If you use the "13.img" method, RS232 is not necessary, but did you use the correct ppcboot for this method ?

I've already tested this method (and a lot of other methods : newtuxflash tool also ! ), but I always get the same message :

BootP> Request from x:x:x:x:x:x (assuming that this is DBox).
BootP> Created dynamic ARP entry for DBoxIP x.x.x.x with MAC x:x:x:x:x:x
BootP> Answer sent!
TFTP> Started TFTP-Transfer for xxxxxx ....

And nothing later. The PC continues sending data, without recieving nothing !

I don't understand german but I tried to translate BootManager's readme.txt and I think there is a bug using 100/10MBits cards, and they did not fixed it !

It seems that in this case the only solution is to have a 10Mbit ethernet card (I don't know if it still exist  )!

For the ppcboot, I already have a good one in my dbox ! in fact the dbox is blocked when it's verifying the checksum (it displays "verifying checksum)!

Do you know a walk around to solve my problem ?

The ppcboot inside your box has nothing to do with the ppcboot needed for flashing.

Your PC seems to block the transfer, this is likely caused by some "personal firewalls" or "anti virus programs".

OK ! I removed my anti-virus (Norman) !
Nothing happends also ! It is quite strange !
I forced my network card to work only in 10Mbits/s, but nothing has changed ! still my PC is sending data to to dbox without any acknowledge !
Should I use a null-modem cable ?

A null-modem cable is a good thing when flashing the dbox2. Without it, debugging any errors is quite difficult.

Is it possible to flash dbox only with null-modem cable ?
